Why Did Vogue Sue Drake? What Led to This?

Why Did Vogue Sue Drake? Recall Drake’s and 21 Savage’s cryptic “Her Loss” release? Everyone was talking about fake Vogue covers, guerilla marketing, and an implied endorsement from Anna Wintour. However, the excitement quickly gave way to legal issues when Vogue chose to sue 21 Savage and Drake.

Why Did Vogue Sue Drake?

In November 2022, fashion magazine Vogue sued rappers Drake and 21 Savage for using its name and image without permission to promote their album “Her Loss.” Drake and 21 Savage didn’t just mention Vogue; they went all out. They created:

1. Fake Vogue covers: Featuring their faces and the magazine’s logo, complete with headlines like “Her Loss: Our Story.”

2. Fake interviews: 21 Savage did a parody “What’s in My Bag?” video, mimicking a popular Vogue series.

3. Fake press tour: They posted pictures and videos pretending to be interviewed by Vogue and other media outlets.

Vogue said this campaign wasn’t just funny; it crossed the line. They argued that people might think Drake and 21 Savage were on a real Vogue cover, and this will damage the magazine’s reputation.

They also argued that it damaged their trademark. The logo and magazine layout are valuable property, and using them without permission hurts their brand.

Parody is okay, but Vogue felt this went too far by being misleading and commercially motivated.

Is the Lawsuit Between Drake and Vogue Settled?

The lawsuit between Drake and Vogue has been settled and closed. Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, was not pleased. They believed the fake covers violated their trademarks, were deceptive, and harmed their brand’s reputation.

Hence on November 2022, they sued Drake and 21 Savage demanding for money damages and no more communication.

Vogue did not sue Drake and there as no ongoing case. Nevertheless, I am not to blame for the complexity that followed after settling in.

In May 2023, Drake publicly displayed an unkind hologram of Wintour during his show. It was during one of his songs. This action was responded to in several different ways: “friendly chitchat” or something more serious.

Who Owns the Rights to Vogue?

Vogue’s rights belong to CondĂ© Nast, a large media and publishing firm. They own the magazine itself, as well as its name, logo, trademarks, and intellectual property.

CondĂ© Nast Publications Inc. controls Vogue, as well as Vanity Fair, GQ, and The New Yorker. CondĂ© Nast’s parent firm, Advance Publications Inc., is, in essence, the big boss behind the scenes.

Final words

Officially, the lawsuit is settled, but the Wintour-Drake dynamic remains unclear. Whether it’s playful banter or lingering friction, one thing’s for sure: their names keep popping up in headlines, keeping the fashion and music worlds buzzing.
