Why Did Elon Musk Leave OpenAI? What Were the Reasons?
Why Did Elon Musk Leave OpenAI? Elon Musk has been involved in some of the most innovative and disruptive companies of the last decade, from Tesla to SpaceX. But one of his earliest ventures was a company called OpenAI, which he co-founded in 2015.
So what led to his departure from the company? And what does it say about the future of AI and machine learning?
Why Did Elon Musk Leave OpenAI?
According to earlier reports, Musk left the parent company of ChatGPT, OpenAI, in 2018 because of a conflict of interest because his other companies, Space X and Tesla, were also developing AI technologies at the same time.
There is, however, more to this story, according to a Semafor report. According to the story, Musk left OpenAI for other reasons in addition to the conflict of interest, which was accurate.
The magazine was informed by people with knowledge of the situation that Musk desired to take the lead at OpenAI.
However, Sam Altman and the other firm founders disagreed with this. Musk then resigned from OpenAI and abandoned his prior pledge to make a sizable investment in the firm.
Recently, Musk stated that he has given OpenAI a donation of $100 million. The millionaire had originally promised to donate about USD 1 billion over some years, according to the Semfor investigation. \
But once he left, he stopped making payments to the company.
Was Elon Musk jealous of ChatGPT’s success?
According to the Semafor article, Musk was reportedly “furious” when ChatGPT gained widespread popularity. Launched in November 2022, the chatbot gained notoriety for answering questions in a way that resembled that of a human.
After barely two months after launch, ChatGPT supposedly had over 100 million users. It quickly gained popularity. The world has gone crazy with the recent unveiling of the more potent GPT-4.
Returning to Musk and OpenAI, Microsoft intervened and made a $1 billion investment after the billionaire stopped giving the startup the money he had promised.
The Semafor study also states that OpenAI and Microsoft later constructed a “supercomputer to train massive models,” which was the impetus for ChatGPT and Dall-E.
What was Sam Altman’s Response?
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, addressed Elon Musk in an interview following rumors that the billionaire was upset over ChatGPT’s widespread use.
Altman claimed that Elon Musk is a “jerk” and “has a style” that the CEO of OpenAI would never aspire to have for himself when appearing on the podcast On With Kara Swisher.
In response to Musk’s tweet about being controlled by Microsoft, Altman stated that he believed Elon knew that much of it was untrue.
Microsoft has no authority over OpenAI. Microsoft is not even represented on their board of directors; they are a separate business.
Final Words
While Elon Musk’s departure from OpenAI may have been surprising, it’s not unusual for founders to move on to new projects.
And while his involvement with OpenAI was short-lived, it’s clear that his passion for AI and machine learning is still going strong.
Musk is now focused on his own AI start-up, Neuralink. So while the future of OpenAI is still uncertain, it’s clear that the future of AI is still in good hands.
