Why Did Alanis Morissette Release an Acoustic Album? What Led to This?
Why Did Alanis Morissette Release an Acoustic Album? In the 1990s, was “You Oughta Know” playing nonstop on every radio station? A period was defined by the raw intensity and angst-filled lyrics of Alanis Morissette. But what if you could listen to those well-known tunes in a completely different way?
When Morissette performed an acoustic version of her breakout album, “Jagged Little Pill,” in 2005, she shocked her fans.
Why Alanis Morissette Released an Acoustic Album
In June 2005, Morissette released Jagged Little Pill Acoustic, a studio acoustic version of the song, to celebrate the song’s tenth anniversary (1995). For a period of six weeks, the CD was only available through Starbucks’ Hear Music retail concept in their coffee shops.
The restricted availability sparked a conflict between HMV North America and Maverick Records, the latter of which responded by taking Morissette’s other albums off the market for the time of Starbucks’s special six-week promotion.
Jagged Little Pill Acoustic had sold 372,000 copies in the United States as of November 2010, and the music video for “Hand in My Pocket” was aired on VH1 in the country.
Midway through her two-month tour in 2005, Morissette performed in small theaters as part of the accompanying tour. In the same year, Morissette received her Walk of Fame induction in Canada.
During a couple of The Rolling Stones’ A Bigger Bang Tour dates in the fall of 2005, the singer served as their opening act.
What Does Alanis Morissette Think of Jagged Little Pill?
Morissette claimed she wasn’t as worried about the album’s reputation in music history as some might think when she was originally approached by producers almost ten years ago about turning her work into a stage musical.
Morissette was not without her limits. She did not want the project to sound like a meaningless jukebox musical that played her tunes.
She insisted to the producers that the show’s creators adhere to her artistic principles, specifically her advocacy for activism, connection, and self-expression.
Before making its New York debut the following year, Jagged Little Pill: The Musical debuted in 2018 at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The Broadway play closed in 2021 because of repeated Covid-19 outbreaks within the group, but the touring cast continues the musical. This Wednesday, the theater company Concord Theatrical revealed that it has purchased the global stage rights to export the production.
Final Words
It’s possible that Alanis Morissette decided to make an acoustic album to revisit a classic, pursue new creative endeavors, and possibly connect with new audiences.
Even though the precise cause is still unknown, “Jagged Little Pill Acoustic” is a monument to the staying power of her compositions and the lasting influence of her breakthrough album.
