Why did Brian kill Gabby? In January, the FBI found Brian’s notebook, near the remains of the 23-year-old at the Carlton Reserve, and it contained written confessions. Read on to find out what the note says.
Why Did Brian Kill Gabby?
I've been to the spot where Gabby was killed. It's right next to the creek Laundrie referenced in his letter- and the creek is next to where van was parked. The van was right there. If she was really hurt- why not take her to a hospital? Or call someone? I had cell service there.

“I took her life,” a passage from the notebook reveals. “I believed it was an act of mercy, thinking it was what she desired. But now I realize the numerous errors I made.
I was overcome with panic and shock. Yet, the moment I made the decision to end her suffering, I knew I couldn’t continue living without her.”
In January, the FBI made an announcement stating that Laundrie’s notebook, discovered near the remains of the 23-year-old at the Carlton Reserve, contained written confessions where he admitted responsibility for the death of Gabby Petito.
Representatives for the Petito and Laundrie families met with the FBI in Tampa to organize and take possession of personal belongings belonging to Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie.
The notebook has captured the attention of the public, becoming a focal point in the case’s intrigue, as well as a potential piece of evidence in the civil lawsuit initiated by Petito’s parents against Laundrie’s parents.
How Did Brian Kill Gabby?
Laundrie wrote a message where he described Petito’s death as an unexpected tragedy. According to him, he and Gabby were hiking back to their van in Wyoming when it became dark.
He heard a splash and a scream, and in the darkness, he struggled to find Gabby. Eventually, he found her breathing heavily and shivering from the cold water.
Laundrie stated that he pulled Gabby out of the water, but she couldn’t communicate where she was hurt. He noticed a small bump on her forehead that later became larger, and she experienced pain in her feet and wrists.
Laundrie mentioned that he didn’t know the full extent of Gabby’s injuries, but he knew she was in extreme pain.
Following Gabby’s death, Laundrie claimed that he returned home to spend his remaining days with his family. He expressed his sorrow and explained that he was ending his own life not out of fear of punishment, but because he couldn’t bear to live without her.
He felt that their future together had been lost, along with all the moments they could have shared. He also apologized for the loss experienced by everyone.
The FBI obtained Laundrie’s notebook, backpack, and the revolver he used to end his life on October 20, 2021. Although the agency announced the closure of its investigation on January 21, it is believed that they have retained the notebook since then.
